Wat Xieng Thong

My photos from a visit to this beautiful Buddhist temple in Luang Prabang, Laos. Built in 1560, the temple is reputed to be one of the most important places of worship in the country. It served as a royal temple until the 20th century, with the coronations of Lao kings taking place within its grounds over the centuries.

Aside from its spiritual value, it is also aesthetically stunning. The walls of these edifices are adorned with colourful mosaics that depict stories from Buddhist tradition. The architectural style is of the traditional South-East Asian sort, with indented curved roofs culminating in a sharp pointed peak and topped with red tiles. The temple is just one of the cultural jewels on offer in the World Heritage status town.
